Getting started

Installation

Install with the Skills CLI or git, per user or per project, and keep it updated.

Requirements

  • Claude Code.
  • Node.js 22.18 or newer. The netlab toolkit is TypeScript that Node runs natively, so there is no npm install and no build step. Check your version:
Terminal
node --version
  • Git, only if you install with git clone.

The Skills CLI downloads the skill and places it where your agent finds it:

Terminal
npx skills add whetstone-dev/network-engineering

To install it globally for Claude Code without any questions:

Terminal
npx skills add whetstone-dev/network-engineering --agent claude-code --global --yes

Option 2: Personal skill with git

A personal skill is available in every project on your machine.

Terminal
# macOS / Linux
git clone https://github.com/whetstone-dev/network-engineering.git ~/.claude/skills/network-engineering
PowerShell
# Windows (PowerShell)
git clone https://github.com/whetstone-dev/network-engineering.git "$HOME\.claude\skills\network-engineering"

Option 3: A single project

Install it inside a repository so everyone who works on that project gets the same skill. A git submodule keeps it pinned to a version:

Terminal
git submodule add https://github.com/whetstone-dev/network-engineering.git .claude/skills/network-engineering

Check that it works

In Claude Code, type / and look for network-engineering in the list. Then try a quick question that needs no model:

Split 192.168.0.0/24 for Sales (60 hosts), IT (25) and a WAN link.

Claude should answer with a VLSM table produced by the toolkit's calculator.

Updating

Terminal
npx skills update # Skills CLI install
git -C ~/.claude/skills/network-engineering pull # git install

Releases follow SemVer and are listed in the changelog. Minor versions never break existing *.net.json models.

Uninstalling

Delete the skill folder — for example ~/.claude/skills/network-engineering — and restart Claude Code. Models and build outputs live in your own project folders, so they are not affected.

Troubleshooting

SymptomFix
The skill doesn't appear in the / listCheck the folder name is exactly network-engineering and that SKILL.md sits at its root, then restart Claude Code.
Errors mentioning .ts files or unknown file extensionsYour Node.js is older than 22.18. Upgrade Node; the toolkit has no other requirements.
Commands fail on paths with spaces (common on Windows)Quote the path to the skill and to your model, for example node "C:\Users\Me\.claude\skills\network-engineering\scripts\netlab.ts" help.
